Our Goals

In December of 2002 Peter and Tatjana Bak were called to missions by God. They went into a time of preparing and looking into what missions would mean for them. Through multiple confirmations it became clear to them that House of Refuge was to be the place where they were called. On the 31st of December, 2006, Peter and Tatjana and their three sons, Chester(Feb. ’96), Jeremy(May ’97), and Nathan(July ’99), were sent out to Thailand to go do supporting missions work at House of Refuge. They left everything they held dear behind to start this new adventure. This meant that they had to learn to live in a new culture, learn the Thai language, and for their sons it also meant studying at an International School.

..“Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”
Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”....(Isaiah 6:8)

They responded to this call because they wanted to be obedient to God, with the Bible as foundation for their decision, knowing that in everything they would be dependent on God.

Peter: I want to use my knowledge and my skills to contribute to a good and safe life for the girls. It is also important to me that the girls see that there are men out there who want only good things for them and who want to be there for them in the right way.
Tatjana: As family we get to be an example for the girls. A family in which there is warmth and love, but sometimes also trouble and strive which we try to solve in a good way. It is important for the girls to experience/see how a healthy family functions.

Both Peter and Tatjana are part of the team that works at House of Refuge. Peter is continually working on the maintenance of the buildings, property, vehicles, appliances, and computers. He is also responsible for leisure facilities, like the building and development of playground equipment. Peter is responsible for safety in and around the houses and is like a father figure for the girls.

Tatjana is responsible for finances for House of Refuge, both in administration and making sure there are enough funds coming in. She also communicates with sponsors, volunteers, and interested parties. She makes sure that the website’s content stays current and writes House of Refuge’s newsletters.

Aside from all of that they both help with organizing activities for the girls.

Tatjana: Aside from our actual jobs at House of Refuge we also give lots of love and attention to the girls and we let them know that they are important.

When the girls arrive they are very shy and then after a few weeks they start to open up more and they start to, little by little, trust the mothers. And then after a while they also start to trust Peter and they seek a healthy rapprochement. You know that they have new hope for the future and that their self-confidence is growing when they come and tease a little, ask for help with their homework, or just come to get a hug. In those moments you realize that you got to shine a light in their lives.

If after reading this you think: “Hey, I want to do something to help!” then you are welcome to do so. But you don’t have to move to Thailand to do it. You can already be a very big help to them by joining the rest of their supporters and subscribing to their newsletter.

The newsletter gets published every 2 months, sadly only available in Dutch(however, our website is in both Dutch and English), with more information about the daily life of the Bak family, their work in Thailand, and current prayer requests. You can subscribe to the newsletter by contacting our secretary.

Please keep the Bak family in your prayers as well as their work in House of Refuge.

Everything they do is done as volunteers which means that they Peter and Tatjana are completely dependent on donations. They do get some financial support from their church but this only accounts for about 15% of everything they need and the rest has to come from family, friends, acquaintances, and people who like what the Bak family does in Thailand.

Please consider supporting Peter and Tatjana by making a donation or by donating on a regular basis.

By making a financial contribution you are ensuring that Peter and Tatjana can continue to do this work for the next few years. You can send your donation to Stichting Light for Asia and specify that it is for “project Thailand”. This foundation has ANBI status meaning that for all Dutch citizens the donations are tax deductible.
