A Cultural Impression

During a nature camp at a military base “jokes” were made by the camp leaders which we couldn’t grasp. This is not because we can’t understand the language but because we do not understand how people can laugh about such jokes. In Thailand it is normal to say something negative about someone and then to laugh about it. For example: “You’re fat” or “You’re black” (everyone here wants to be white because if you have darker skin you are part of a minority group). When such a joke is made everyone laughs as hard as they can, meanwhile Nathan gets really angry because someone’s feelings are being hurt. He would like to defend the victim of the joke. If Nathan were to do that he would become the “laughing stock” and thus the subject of mischievous glee. This is the reason why the Thai people laugh at these jokes and also why they don’t defend each other. They are way too scared of becoming the victim. The victim of the jokes tries their best to laugh just as hard as the rest to cover up the pain inside. But what it does to a person??? They clearly don’t think about that!

Termites and Bathrooms

According to many people, work in and around a house is never finished and so you never have to be bored. This is especially the case when there are four houses and three buildings to maintain. For this reason Peter is never bored. In one of the houses there are two bathrooms in which the warm water pipes burst. This means that you have to break open the walls, replace the old pipes with new ones, fix the walls, and put in new tiles. Yes, it sounds easy when you write it down but it takes up a lot of time.

Some things Peter can’t do himself but a local company does it for him. This includes a roof that is high above the kitchen and has been attacked by termites. Termites love to eat wood but apparently the wood in the forests does not taste good enough. So they come in and eat the wood that is supposed to keep the roof up. The roof has become weak and the local company has started renovating the roof. Even though Peter can’t do this job himself he can arrange for it to happen and he can also keep an eye on what the builders are doing

Foosball Table

During our last furlough Peter and Jeremy came up with the idea to make a foosball table. Yes, you’re reading it correctly! They wanted to make it themselves. For a very long time now Jeremy has been looking for a foosball table but in Northern Thailand it is impossible to find a shop that sells one. And even if there was a shop that sold them it would still have been way too expensive. So they decided to look on the internet for building schematics and to just make it themselves. In the Netherlands Peter and Jeremy bought the figures and the scorekeeping racks but the rest of it was made here. The result is magnificent. The table has already been used for some tournaments and it works well. Feel free to come by some time then you can play too.

NedThai
